The wealth of data from Copernicus satellites can be used to provide effective solutions in response to the diffusion of this pandemic. Therefore, we would like to draw your attention to two new ESA initiatives related to exploring and understanding the effects that COVID-19 imposed on society, economy, and environment:
- the first call for proposals has the objective to see how satellite data can be used, for example, to map changes around transport networks, commercial ports and heavy industry such as oil refineries. Bidders can propose new innovative developments to characterise the impacts of Covid-19. This new call has been added to the Permanently Open Call, which is part of ESA’s Earth Observation Science for Society programme. Please open these links to find out more information on the submission process. Deadline: 17 April 2020 at 13:00 (Amsterdam Local Time Zone).
- the Custom Script Contest will be launched on 6 April by ESA in coordination with the European Commission to call for remote sensing experts, machine learning scientists as well as the interested public to submit ideas on how satellite data could help mitigate the situation for economic sectors such as industry, commerce, transport, and agriculture, but is also open to other ideas. The contest will be running until the end of May. The best ideas will be selected on a continuous basis and will be rewarded with cash prizes but also presented to the European Commission.
