“Space Seminar” – “Campus to Cosmos: University-researcher’s Experiments in Space” on 27 November 2024

The AGH Space Technology Center (NEREUS member) invites you to the November “Space Seminar” – “Campus to Cosmos: University-researcher’s Experiments in Space”.

The seminar will be led by Dr. BHM Darukesha from the Indian Space Research Organization, who is currently a visiting professor at the AGH Space Technology Center.

The meeting will be held on 27.11.2024 at 10:00 online via MsTeams https://bit.ly/4fQQCcv (registration is not required)

During the seminar, Dr. BHM Darukesha will talk about the journey of experiments: from their inception in academic laboratories to implementation in space. The meeting aims to inspire scientists and students to implement ideas and to provide them with best practices for research conducted in space.

The seminar will be held in English.

Abstract: This talk explores the journey of university researchers, from conceptualizing experiments in academic labs to executing them in space environments. It aims to inspire and inform postgraduate students, PhD candidates, and early-career academics in disciplines such as STEM, life sciences, environmental studies, psychology, and data science about opportunities, experimental design, and best practices for space-based research. Focusing on practical aspects, the talk covers global funding opportunities, suitability and selection criteria, and the design and execution of space-based experiments. It equips researchers to navigate challenges and maximize the scientific impact of their work. Key topics include major players in the space sector, the unique conditions of space, available research platforms, and current trends in space R&D. This session aims to inspire and empower researchers to take their first steps toward contributing to humanity’s expanding presence in space. It also seeks to benefit space agencies and industry by enhancing the impact of their collaboration with academia. Bio-data: Dr. BHM Darukesha, a Scientist at the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), is currently a Visiting Professor at the Space Technology Centre, AGH University of Krakow, Poland. Dr. Darukesha holds a Ph.D. in Physics from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore.

Leading the Thin-Films Laboratory, he has gained expertise in developing modules, instruments, sensors, and scientific payloads for space applications, with a specialization in RF/Microwave packaging. His current research interests include the development of processes, and the interaction of ionizing radiation with nanomaterials including Au, Gd2O3, HfO2, WO3, Pt, and MXenes. Having served as the investigator for academic collaborations, Dr. Darukesha is enthusiastic about enabling academic researchers to transform their ideas into space missions.
