Strengthening Europe’s Water Resilience: NEREUS Contribution

Water is essential for life, the economy, food production, energy, and ecosystem services. Ensuring sustainable water management is crucial not only for safeguarding Europe’s water security but also for maintaining well-being and economic competitiveness.

As part of the European Water Resilience Strategy, the European Commission has launched an initiative to enhance water efficiency across multiple policy domains and sectors. This effort aims to reduce water consumption and abstraction by promoting higher efficiency and circularity.

Recognizing the crucial role of space technologies in this effort, NEREUS (Network of European Regions Using Space Technologies) has submitted its recommendations to support the integration of space-based data and services into water management strategies. By leveraging Earth Observation (EO) and Copernicus data, Europe can enhance water governance, improve efficiency, and develop innovative solutions for monitoring, conservation, and climate adaptation. Strengthening strategic partnerships between water and space stakeholders, optimizing data-sharing mechanisms, and integrating new technologies such as Digital Twins and IoT-based monitoring will be key to ensuring Europe’s water security and resilience.
